A white South African
This is pure Kentridge. An impressive 360° projection of an operatic parade of South Africans with an excellent band playing, standard bearers and dancers. Real images over which are superimposed his drawings and, in this photo, me. It really is very rousing. William Kentridge is a white South African committed to the issues raised by apartheid and many of his works allude to these issues, but he is sufficiently good that when he paints flowers, he creates a whole operatic scene, and when he arranges this procession, his political commitments don’t intrude. I got to know Kentridge on account of his important collaboration on the Toledo station in Naples, for which he made two murals and an equestrian statue. We got on very well together; it was a very pleasing relationship.
